GETTING STARTED
Your First Steps on Lighter
From connecting your wallet to placing your first trade — no KYC, no email, no passwords. Follow our step-by-step guides and learn how to place your first trade on Lighter in just a few minutes. Visit the Lighterpedia homepage for a full platform overview.
Wallet Setup and First Connection
Lighter supports standard Web3 wallets, and connecting one takes under 30 seconds. You install a wallet as a browser extension or mobile app, visit app.lighter.xyz, and click "Connect Wallet." Lighter then prompts a one-time signature to create your trading session automatically — there is no email signup, no password, and no KYC step at any point. Once connected, the wallet remains the sole authentication mechanism for the account; losing access to the wallet means losing access to the funds, so secure the seed phrase before depositing meaningful capital. For background on the platform itself, our guide to how trading on Lighter works covers the ZK order book, verifiable matching, and why connecting a wallet does not require giving up custody.
Depositing USDC and How Settlement Works
Lighter uses USDC as collateral and settles to Ethereum. You launch the app, connect and sign with your wallet, then deposit USDC to fund your account. Lighter charges no trading fee on standard order-book perps and spot, though deposits and withdrawals still incur normal Ethereum network costs. Deposits typically credit within a couple of minutes under normal conditions. Most new accounts start with a modest amount of USDC to have enough margin headroom for a real position after typical leverage, but you can start with any amount. If terms or steps are unclear, our full how-to-trade walkthrough covers the connect-deposit-trade flow end to end, and the deposit not showing guide explains what to check if a balance does not appear right away.
Placing Your First Trade: Order Mechanics
Once funded, opening a position takes three inputs: market, size, and direction. From the trading interface, you select a market — Lighter offers 150+ of them, including crypto perps, spot, real-world assets, and pre-IPO perps for companies like OpenAI, SpaceX, and Anthropic — choose long or short, set your size, and choose your leverage (up to 50x). Lighter runs a full on-chain order book with verifiable matching, and supports market, limit, stop-loss, and take-profit order types; for a first trade, market orders fill at the best available price and are the simplest. Long positions profit when price rises; opening a short uses the same flow with the direction toggle flipped, and you profit when price falls — useful for hedging spot holdings or taking directional views. To go deeper on leverage mechanics, see our leverage and order types explainer.
Costs and Points on Day One
Lighter is zero-fee for standard accounts on its order-book perps and spot markets, so a typical first trade costs nothing in trading fees — you only pay Ethereum network costs on deposits and withdrawals. Premium tiers tied to the LIT token can unlock advanced features. From day one, activity also accrues Lighter points in the ongoing Season 2 program, distributed weekly on Fridays, which are widely expected to feed into a future LIT airdrop — though timing and per-point value are unconfirmed estimates, not promises. Funding payments (the perpetual-vs-spot price equalization mechanism) settle on a fixed cycle and can add to or subtract from your P&L; for the average new trader these are small relative to position size, but at higher leverage they compound. Always verify current terms in the Lighter docs and app. See our full fees breakdown for the complete picture.
Account Safety and the Escape Hatch
Self-custody on Lighter means the wallet is the account — losing the seed phrase means losing the funds, and there is no customer-support recovery path. Standard wallet hygiene applies: store the seed phrase offline (hardware wallet or steel backup, never a screenshot or cloud notes), use a hardware wallet for any meaningful balance, and consider a dedicated trading wallet separate from long-term holdings. Lighter adds a protocol-level safeguard here too — its Escape Hatch lets you recover funds trust-minimally directly from Ethereum if the operator ever goes offline, so you are never fully dependent on the venue staying up. Trading on the go works through any wallet-browser combo on iOS or Android. Whichever way you access it, the protocol keeps you in custody throughout.
Reference and Next Steps
If terms like maker, taker, funding, liquidation, or cross-margin are new, keep our how-to-trade guide open in a second tab during your first few trades — it covers the workflow used in the trading interface step by step. The fastest learning path is to make a small first trade to walk through the full open-and-close flow live. If you came to Lighter specifically for its pre-IPO or RWA markets, the same wallet-to-first-trade flow applies, ending on an OpenAI, SpaceX, or gold position instead of a crypto perp. Once you're comfortable with the basics, the trading hub at /guides/trading covers order types, leverage, and the RWA and pre-IPO markets. Curious how Lighter stacks up against the competition?
